September 9th, 2009How FIFA Rankings Work?

Let’s try and break this up and have a look at how it’s done. There are four main parameters upon which the number of points scored by a team in a match is determined.

1) Firstly, points are awarded for the result. Three points for victory, one for a draw, and none for defeat. In case of penalties, the winning team gains two points, and the losing team gets one. Let’s call this parameter A.

2) Then comes the importance of the fixture. Let’s call this factor B. Here’s how this factor takes its value:

Friendly matches - 1.0
WC Qualifier & Continental Qualifier - 2.5
Continental final competition and COnfederations Cup - 3.0
World Cup final competition - 4.0

3) This factor gives importance to the strength of the opposition. The team at the top of the rankings is given the value 2.0, and the rest are calculated as per this formula:

(200-Rank) / 100.

Which means that if someone is playing 6th ranked Russia, they would have this value equal to 1.94. However, if the opposition is ranked 150th or below, this value is kept at a minimum of 0.50. Let’s call this factor C.

4) This gives importance to the strength of the confederation. If an inter-continental match is being played, the value that’s taken into consideration is the mean value of both confederation’s strength factors. These values are calculated using the number of victories for their confederation’s teams in the last three World Cups. These are the current values. Let’s call this D.

UEFA - 1.00
CONMEBOL - 0.98
CONACAF - 0.85
AFC - 0.85
CAF - 0.85
OFC - 0.85

Taking these four factors into consideration, the total number of points amassed by a team in a match is calculated. The total number of points gathered by a team in one game can be given by:

Total Points (P) = A x B x C x D x 100

The points amassed per match don’t decide the net score alone. An average score of all matches played in the last twelve months is calculated. The average is combined with averages from earlier games, which are devalued as time goes on. The weightage given to games in the last four years decrease with each year (100%,50%,30%,20%).

So for example, let’s take the Nehru Cup final between India and Syria, and calculate how many points India scored in that game.

For that match:

A = 2 (They won on penalties)

B = 1.0 (These matches are counted as friendlies)

C = (200-95)/100 = 1.05 (Syria were ranked 95 in the world)

D = 0.85 (Strength factor of AFC is 0.85)

Therefore, the total number of points amassed by India in that game was:

(2 x 1 x 1.05 x 0.85 x 100) = 178.5

That’s hardly a high number, as the maximum points a team can gain from a match is 2400.

And from the victories against Krygyztan and Sri Lanka, India garnered a total of 255 points. The final against Syria WAS NOT counted for the new rankings, so India should move further up once October’s rankings are announced.

Taking another example, where more points were scored in a game, let’s take the World Cup 2006 Quarter Final between France and Brazil and calculate the points using the current system.

Brazil lost and scored zero points.

For France:

A = 3 (Won in normal time)

B = 4.0 (It was a World Cup game)

C = 2.0 (Brazil were ranked No.1 at the time)

D = (1 + 0.98)/2 = 0.99 (Taking the mean of the strength factors of UEFA & CONMEBOL)

Total Points = (3 x 4 x 2 x .99 x 100) = 2376

So that was an example of a game where close to maximum points were scored by a team.

August 25th, 2009iphone battery not charging?

iphone 2g, 3g, 3gs

I had recently borrowed an iphone from a friend to check its functionality. It worked fine for few days (apart from its call hang bug). However today when I installed skype and ebuddy on the iphone I used up all the power of my iphone and thus wanted to charge the iphone. However was astonished to see that the iphone was not charging up even after plugging it to my pc for 3 hours. Infact I noticed that the iphone was unusually hot than normal. Even when I tried to disconnect and connect back, nothing happened. The iphone was dead in some time which left me terrified and queasy :(

Then I decided to ask google (my savior) about these rationals. There I found that I was not the only 1 who faced this problem. Just after seeing so many pages on google on this topic, I gave a sigh of relief but not because there were so many people who were effected but because I felt that there would be a solution to this issue.
The people who most faced this issue were the ones who had jailbreaken their iphones :) That doesnt mean I have a jailbreaken phone ok.

The solution was simple however unusual:

1) Step 1 try to reboot your iphone by pressing Home button and power button for 8-10 secs
2) Then try to keep your phone on charging and see what happens.

If still the issue exists then try to reboot your iphone for couple of times. I had to do it for 5-7 times.

If does not work, post here and I will try to help you out in some way…

August 18th, 2009Paryushana (Paryusan) Parva

paryushan-parva
Two of the most important festivals for the Jains are Paryushana (Paryusan) and Diwali OR Pratikramana (Samayika): Renewal meditation
The original Prakrit (ardhamagadhi) term for Paryushana is “Pajjo-savana”. In case of Jain terms, the Prakrit forms of the words are the original.

“Parismantadushayante dhante karmani yasimannasau paryushnm”

Paryushana is staying of the monks in one place. In popular terminology, this stay is termed chaturmasa because the rainy season is regarded to be about four months. However, the minimum duration of Paryushanaa is regarded to be 70 days. For this minimum duration, Paryushana must be initiated by panchami (fifth day) of the shukla phase of the Bhadrapada month. In the scriptures it is described that Lord Mahavira used to start Paryushana on Bhadrapada Shukla panchami. After Lord Mahavir, nearly 150 years Jain Samvatsari was shifted to Chaturthi (4 th day of Bhadrapada of Shukla phase. since 2200 years jains follows Chaturthi.

Paryushan Parva is an annual religious festival of the Jains. In Jainisim, fasting is considered as a spiritual activity, that purify our souls, improve morality, spiritual power, increase knowledge and strengthen relationships. The purpose is to purify our souls by staying closer to our own souls, looking at our faults and asking for forgiveness for the mistakes and taking vows to minimize our faults.

Religious and spiritual discourses are held where tales of Lord Mahavira are narrated. The Namokar Mantra is chanted everyday. At the end of Fasting, all will ask for forgiveness for any violence or wrongdoings they may have imposed previous year

Digambara Jains observe it for a period of ten days during which Dashalakshana vrata is undertaken. Tatwartha Sutra of Umaswati is recited. They celebrate Ananta- Chaturdasi on the Chaturdasi.

Svwetambara Jains celebrate it as an 8 day festival which ends with Bhadarpada Shukla Panchami. Kalpa Sutra is recited including the section of birth of birth of Lord Mahavira. The last day is called Samvatsari.

The date for the Paryushana festival is thus Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi for both major sects. Because of computational and other differences, there can be some minor differences among various subsects. Recently there has been an attempt standardize the date.

August 18th, 2009The secret of negotiation!!

This is what Wikipedia has to say about “Negotiation”. And I totally agree to it.
Negotiation is a dialogue intended to resolve disputes, to produce an agreement upon courses of action, to bargain for individual or collective advantage, or to craft outcomes to satisfy various interests. It is the primary method of alternative dispute resolution.

Negotiation occurs in business, non-profit organizations, government branches, legal proceedings, among nations and in personal situations such as marriage, divorce, parenting, and everyday life. The study of the subject is called negotiation theory. Professional negotiators are often specialized, such as union negotiators, leverage buyout negotiators, peace negotiators, hostage negotiators, or may work under other titles, such as diplomats, legislators or brokers.

Thirty-Three Rules to Remember:

Thirty-Three Rules to Remember which I read from a book called- Start With NO / by Jim Camp

1 Every negotiation is an agreement between two or more parties with all parties having the right to veto - the right to say “no”.
2 Your job is not to be liked. It is to be respected and effective.
3 Results are NOT valid goals.
4 Money has nothing to do with a valid mission and purpose.
5 Never, ever, spill your beans in the lobby-or anywhere else.
6 Never enter a negotiation without a valid agenda
7 The only valid goals are those that you can control: behavior and activity.
8 Mission and Purpose must be set in the adversary’s world; our world must be secondary.
9 Spend maximum time on payside activity and minimum time on nonpayside activity.10. You do NOT need it. You only want it.
10 You do NOT need it. You only want it.
11 No saving. You cannot save the adversary.
12 Only one person in the negotiation can feel okay. That person is the adversary.
13 All actions and all decisions begin with vision. Without vision, there is no action.
14 Always show respect to the blocker
15 All agreements must be clarified point by point and sealed the times (3+).
16 The clearer the picture of pain, the easier the decision-making process.
17 The value of negotiation increases by multiples as time, energy, money, and emotion are spent.
18 No talking.
19 Let the adversary save face at all times.
20 The greatest presentation you will ever give is one your adversary will never see.
21 A negotiation is only over when you want it to be over.
22 No is good, “yes” is bad, “maybe” is worse.
23 Absolutely no closing.
24 Dance with the tiger.
25 Our greatest strength is our greatest weakness (Emerson).
26 Paint the Pain.
27 Mission and Purpose drive everything.
28 Decisions are 100% emotional.
29 Interrogative-led questions drive vision.
30 Nurture.
31 No assumptions. No expectations. Only blank slate.
32 Who are the decision makers? Do you know ALL of them?
33 Pay forward.

google-promote-button-harshad-narvekar
I am sure you must be using google for searching anything/something on internet (What a foolish question). While doing that you must have noticed a new arrow button to each search result (1 shown in the above image). Yes that arrow up and arrow down button is called the google promote buttons. This is a new google gizmo which is introduced again to make user experience better on google.

It is rather simple button, when we click takes that search result on the top. But people (where I mean ‘I’) thought that is another SEO antic which Google might have introduced to help increase the page rank of that site and that so instantally. Hurray!! Isnt it? Hmm….Not quite so…the Google promote button is meant to be a personal button, a way to ensure that sites you like stay at the top of your search results. It does not mean a credit card affiliate can type “credit card” in Google, click their site, and think that this further optimizes the site for that search term. If anything, it’s just a way for webmasters to get a little ego boost seeing their results at the top of the page.

But does this promote button have any SEO value? Will it help increase the SERPS or SEO of a page? What if 1000 of people click the promote button for a site/page and increase their chance on google? There are so many black hat SEO techniques which already are doing it and this will engage people into a new SEO war.

Do you think Google thinks the way we do? Or has google already contemplated these point? Google must have already chalked out a solvent to all these problems. Google is not dump. Google just kept these buttons - promote and remove per-user. These are not yet digg or hot or not tools. They are just mean to organize your search results. The fav ones on the top and the less fav ones below.
Isnt it this a out of box feature or just a simple feature but affective one? Thats what google aims to - Make life simple. God! Please give me brains 1% as Google has.

I was reading The Guy Kawasaki blog and came across to this interesting and inspiring article written on an American Express Open Forum. it was posted by Pamela Slim. This articles explains the four stages of entrepreneurship—and why you probably not crazy! Check it out by clicking here
